Work/Life: The Pursuit of Balance

For many of us, the pursuit of maintaining or developing a healthy work/life balance seems like an impossible goal.  We are often torn between juggling daily workloads, managing family responsibilities along with trying to take time out for ourselves.  We overload ourselves with a constant rush to complete daily tasks at work and our homes.  While at the same time, we neglect our stress levels and what we may actually be feeling.  Because of this, it’s not surprising to hear that many of us describe ourselves as overly-stressed.  The good news is, with proper awareness and tools, stress can be managed.

Set Obtainable Goals

While at work, it’s a good idea to establish manageable goals each day.  The key word is manageable.  It is a good idea to prioritize your goals, allowing you to not only complete them in a timely manner but also develop a sense of accomplishment and control.  The feeling of accomplishing a goal strengthens character and develops a greater appreciation for your work assignments, thus allowing one to be more efficient and time oriented.

Take a Moment

The old saying, “take five” is very important.  Breaks during the workday should be encouraged.  We are often bombarded with a false belief that working through breaks and lunch is effective.  Truth is, it’s stressful and unhealthy.  Taking breaks will help you clear your mind and help you deal with stress and allow you to make good decisions.  There is nothing wrong with giving yourself a break.

Be Honest and Realistic

Communicate effectively with your colleagues. Be honest with your colleagues and place emphasis on communicating not complaining. Suggestions are respected, and likely, others will share the viewpoint of your ideas. We are all human, so encourage those around you and you are likely to see others help you achieve your best.

What about at home? Glad you asked.

Home is Where the Balance is

Leave your work at work whenever possible (that means all your work and the weight that comes with it).  It’s difficult to enjoy your family and all that home life has to offer if you are still plugged into your job.  Often times we find ourselves clocked-out, but stay plugged-in, isn’t that funny?  You wouldn’t work for no pay but allow yourself to build up stress with no incentive.  It’s a good idea to ensure that your home life is just that, home life.

You’re in Control of Your Life

Learn to say “no”and enjoy the relaxation of being home or doing activities with no time constriction.  Stay active and treat yourself.  Reward yourself for the hours you have completed at work.  You and your family are who you are working for.  Take time to simply be happy.  Don’t allow stress to be in the way.  If so, take advantage of the help offered by your employer and close friends and family.

A balanced life is the key to success and individual happiness. The same smile you have at home should find itself into the workplace.
